We passed more colorful trees on our trek from our hotel in Dedham, Massachusetts to The Breakers mansion in Rhode Island. The Breakers is one of the grandest of the Newport summer cottages. It was built by millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt II. He was one of the richest men in America. The Breakers was built from 1893-1895 in an Italian palazzo design and combined the best American and European craftsmanship. The mansion is huge, covering nearly an acre on the 13-acre property. It has 70 rooms, 27 fireplaces and 48 bedrooms for family and the staff. You could look out at views of the water. The Preservation Society purchased the house and property in 1972 from the Vanderbilt heirs. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994. Downloading the Newport Mansion app and listening to it, we were able to do a self-guided tour of the mansion.
After the tour, we ate lunch in Newport at Bowen’s Wharf. Later we drove through Connecticut, stopping for a break at a truck plaza. We arrived at our hotel in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, around 6 pm for a two-night stay.Forester, James Bowditch, determined the pattern of the South parterre garden
