Day 5 -- Haines, July 15, 2014

Day 5 (Tuesday) Malispina Ferry to Chilkoot River Lodge, Haines

The four-hour ferry ride in the morning from Juneau to Haines gave everyone a chance to enjoy the beauty of Alaska on a bright, sunny day. We went by an island called Eldred Rock. For over 100 years, it has been the home of the Eldred Rock Lighthouse.

We arrived in Haines around noon by ferry. We took a taxi into town and then rented our Toyota Sienna van. It was about a 10 minute drive to the Chilkoot River Lodge. The lodge is set up on the bank of the river and has the most spectacular view. Eagles soared over the river below the lodge. We were too early to see the bears at the lake, but it still was one of our favorites, if not the favorite place, we stayed while in Alaska. Our only regret was that we didn't book enough nights here.

We would love to come back to this scenic lodge late in the year when the salmon run draws what is thought to be the largest concentration of eagles in the world. Up to 3,000 eagles have been counted in a three-mile stretch near Haines.
